On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his term.

A Historic Figure

The new political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my principles for worry of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Dynamics

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
