In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
