A Number of Affected as In-Flight Disturbance Impacts Delta Aircraft Arriving in Sydney, Australia

Multiple passengers and crew sustained injuries following a Delta flight from LA to Sydney, Australia experienced turbulence Friday morning.

Delta Flight 41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it made its approach and landed at Sydney Airport, an airline spokesperson stated. Four flight attendants were injured.

Emergency medical services stated they assessed five individuals, and transported a trio to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that included back pain and head pain. The injured were between their thirties and seventies.

This marks the newest example of commercial jets encountering atmospheric disturbance, with experts pointing out that global warming is a major factor.

The aircraft was carrying nearly 250 travelers and fifteen staff members on the aircraft, the official added, stating that the plane touched down "without further incident" at the airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on Friday morning.

Emergency responders reported they received a call just three minutes prior to the plane landed, and emergency vehicles were waiting on the tarmac.

The reasons turbulence is getting increasingly prevalent - and often stronger.

During the past year, twenty-five passengers and crew were hurt when a separate Delta aircraft, flying from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, Netherlands, hit "considerable" rough air just 120 minutes into the transoceanic journey, and diverted for an unscheduled landing.

In 2024, those on board on a Singapore Airlines flight experienced a frightening short but intense of severe turbulence. An individual passed away and dozens were injured, as individuals not fastened in rose out of their seats and were slammed back.

Turbulence is fairly routine on aircraft journeys, and while cases of strong or severe turbulence seem to be rising, they are still very rare.
